SENDA MAYA, A MAYAN CULTURE TOURS

9 DAYS / 8 NIGHTS    

DAY 1 – WELCOME – SUMIDERO CANYON – CHIAPA DE CORZO – SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS      

  • 12:30 p.m. Welcome at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport where we will begin the journey through Chiapas and the Maya Route. Transfer to the pier to take a boat. Travel Tip: Wear comfortable clothes.    
  • 1:30 p.m. We will have a lovely boat ride in the majestical Sumidero Canyon over the Grijalva River, one of the principal natural attractions of Chiapas.  On the way, it will be possible to watch various species of birds and with a little bit of luck monkeys and crocodiles.   
  • 3:30 p.m. We will visit Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial magic town, where there will be time to see the downtown with its mudéjar style fountain and the ex-convent of Santo Domingo eat and taste typical dishes.   Later on, we will transfer you to the hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas to check in and rest, arriving at 7:00 p.m.

DAY 2 – TOUR TO SAN JUAN CHAMULA AND ZINACANTAN – SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS    

  • 9:00 a.m. We will continue enjoying our mayan culture tours, today our Chiapas tour  is heading to the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan to learn about their traditions. In the church of San Juan Chamula we will observe a mystical mixture of indigenous and catholic rites. In Zinacantan we will spend some time with a local family and appreciate their hand made embroideries. 
  • 1:30 p.m. We will return to San Cristobal de las Casas. Spare time to stroll through its colorful narrow streets, buy handicrafts, visit the downtown of this lovely magic town, seeing some important points like The Cathedral, Peace Square, Santo Domingo and the arch called Arco Del Carmen. Hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas.   

DAY 3 – VISIT TO “LA VENTA” MUSEUM OR YUMKA – PALENQUE

  • Breakfast at hotel.   
  • 8:00 am. We begin our tour traveling to  Villahermosa (4 ½ hours) to visit the Park Museum La Venta, which is one of the biggest tourist attractions of Villahermosa. It’s an outdoor museum that treasures one of the greatest collections of pieces belonging to the Olmeca Culture, or instead we can visit Yumka Park, this place is ideal for families with children due to its an environmental recreation center and offers the opportunity to know about the jungle ecosystems, savanna and the region’s own lagoon. You can observe some animals in freedom. The park is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.    
  • Later on, 2-hour transfer to the hotel in Palenque.  Travel Tip You can eat in Villahermosa before leaving.

DAY 4: TOUR TO THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE OF PALENQUE –MISOL HA OR ROBERTO BARRIOS WATERFALL – PALENQUE   

  • Breakfast at hotel and continue enjoying our Maya Route tour.
  • 8:00 a.m. We depart the hotel to visit the Palenque Archaeological Zone, one of the most important cities of the Maya Culture. We will be able to explore and visit the Skull Temple, Inscriptions Temple, Red Queen´s Temple, Crosses Temple as well as the Main Palace of Palenque. As well as the Queen’s baths (a natural cascade in the archaeological zone). Everything is surrounded by a forest landscape.
  • After this, we will visit one of the waterfalls near Palenque: Misol Ha or Roberto Barrios. Spare time to enjoy the natural beauty of the crystalline waters that run through the forest mountains. 
  • Return to Palenque Magic Town to spend the night.

DAY 5 – TRANSFER TO CAMPECHE 

  • Breakfast at hotel. And let’s keep enjoying the tour through Campeche! 
  • 9:00 a.m. A 5 hour transfer to Campeche city. Tip: We recommend to have lunch on route or when arriving to Campeche (meal not included) Arriving time will be at 3:00 p.m. Check-in in hotel and spare time in the afternoon to visit this lovely walled Heritage City. Travel Tip: Visit the most important points of the Historical Center in the trolley, visit the bastions and museums surrounding the Historical Center, visit the Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, there is also the chapel of the Black Christ, enjoy a delicious meal in the gastronomic hall on 59th Street where the tables and chairs are located along the street, a stroll along the boardwalk, or visit Fort San Miguel and at night you can enjoy the night light and sound show at Puerta de Tierra called “El lugar del Sol”

DAY 6 – VISIT TO THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE OF UXMAL – MERIDA       

  • Breakfast at hotel. 
  • 8:00 am. Depart the hotel to see another wonder of the mayan culture tours declared World Heritage: Uxmal, this stunning city has a Puuc style architecture, traditional in this zone, besides being distributed in a quadrangular design in which we can observe one of the Mayas most beautiful and relevant ancient cities. In this Maya route, we will admire its structures and go back in time to learn about this ancestral culture. Inside the buildings that you will see are the House of the Prophet, Governor’s Palace, The Convent, among others. 
  • Ending the trip, we will return to Merida where you will have spare time and spend the night.

Travel tips: We recommend stroll through the famous Paseo Montejo, the longest and most beautiful avenue in Merida (more than 5km long) and admire its old houses and colonial buildings dating The Colony and Porfiriato time.  There is a free cultural event, in different places, in Merida’s downtown every night. DAY 7 – VISIT TO THE HACIENDA SOTUTA DE PEON – CENOTE – MERIDA AIRPORT   

  • Breakfast at hotel. Check out. Last day of our Maya route tour.   
  • 8:15 a.m. We will begin out tour in Hacienda Soluta de Peon, where we will have an interesting 2-hour journey to the past while we enjoy of the most important points of the Hacienda. While going through the Hacienda you will feel transported in time,  since you will be going aboard wooden platforms over rails called “Trucks” that are pulled by mules, just as the workers used them in that time.
  • Here, you will be able to know the transformation process of the Henequen (also called in this region Green Gold), from the plant to the fiber, and from the fiber to the finished product. Besides being able to visit a typical Maya house and also refresh yourself in the best kept secret of the Hacienda, the Cenote, where you will be able to swim in its beautiful rivers of fresh and crystalline waters, or if you prefer you can also swim in the Hacienda´s swimming pool that is surrounded by an spectacular vegetation. At the end of the trip, there will be time, if you wish, to have lunch in the Hacienda. (Meal not included). 
  • Transfer to the hotel in Merida.

DAY 8 – TOUR TO THE RIA CELESTUN BIOSPHERE – MERIDA    

  • Breakfast included at hotel. ¿What else to enjoy in this mayan culture tours?       
  • 8:00 a.m. An almost 2 hour transfer to the Ria Celestun Biosphere reserve, this is one of the reserves with greater richness of species and interdependent ecosystems, that is, mangroves, dunes, petenes, low jungle and pastures. One of the main attractions of the reserve is the bird watching, since Ria Celestun is one of the main places for resting, feeding and reproduction of a great variety of birds among them the colonies of beautiful pink flamingos.  ¡Surprising! This Maya route tour includes a boat ride lasting a little less than 2 hours by the ria, the mangroves and the birds island, as well as having time to refresh in a spring with crystalline waters. Tip: The flamingos are nervous birds, so we ask you not to scare them or make them fly. We recommend you to enjoy them silently and do not forget to have your camera or video ready.    
  • Ending the trip at approximately 12:00 p.m., you will have time for lunch and taste seafood caught by the local fishermen in a restaurant in front of the sea.  Trip tips: Bring along swimming suit and a personal towel in case you want to swim. 
  • 3:00 p.m. Return to the hotel in Merida, arriving approximately at 5:00 pm.

DAY 9 – VISIT TO THE CHICHEN ITZA ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE – CENOTE IKKIL – MERIDA   

  • Breakfast al hotel. We will finish this spectacular journey to Mexico.
  • 8:00 a.m. Departure to the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza, Wonder of the World of the Maya Culture and also World Heritage. You will be able to see The Observatory, the Ball Game, Temple of the Thousand Columns and the famous Kulkulkan Pyramide where twice a year, during the equinox, the feathered serpent formed by the sun comes down.
  • 1:00 p.m. We will continue our visit with the perfect combination: a refreshing visit to the Cenote Ikkil where you will be able to enjoy its underground waters and the beautiful landscape that surrounds them.
  • Lunch time and later on, we will return to the hotel in Merida, or if you prefer to the hotel in Cancun to end this beautiful tour of the Mayan World. Travel Tip: We can also transfer you directly to the Mérida airport, arriving at 5:00 p.m. and take a flight that leaves after 7:30 p.m.
